“There are gates in heaven that cannot be opened except by melody and song.”
- The Alter Rebbe
Where I’m At
I currently serve as cantor, spiritual leader, and educator at Temple Beth Emeth (TBE) in Ann Arbor, MI. Leading an amazing community like TBE and charting its spiritual and musical course has been a dream come true.
I get to prepare and meet one-on-one with b’nei mitzvah students and their families, work collaboratively with the TBE clergy team and other synagogue staff, plan special events, provide pastoral care, musically direct TBE’s choir, Kol Halev, teach in a variety of capacities, and so much more.
I previously served as cantor at The Village Temple in New York City’s artsy Greenwich Village neighborhood, the same community where I served as a student cantor during my studies.
How I Got Started
Since I was a Bat Mitzvah student I dreamt about becoming a cantor. It was a lifelong aspiration, now realized. My family belonged to the storied Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Preparing for my Bat Mitzvah as well as singing in the youth choir, and attending Jewish day school, gave me a sense of purpose through my years of education to follow.
I trained as a vocalist, studied Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University, and eventually enrolled at Hebrew Union College, where I was ordained as a cantor and earned a masters in Jewish sacred music. Along the way I performed in hallowed venues, including St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, among many others. I worked in some amazing synagogues and even served as a cantorial soloist at Wilshire Boulevard Temple many times, the place where my dream began.
Beyond the Cantorate
When not immersed in ritual and song, I spend time in nature, walk through farmers markets, and practice yoga. I’ve been cultivating a meditation and yoga practice and work to weave in the beauty and depth found in other traditions into my work as a cantor.
As a musician and professional singer, my musical interests extend beyond Jewish liturgical music: I especially love to listen to and play Folk and Americana music. You’ll always find me humming a tune.
I’m also a terrific thrifter: I delight in finding real gems at thrift shops, and am often tasked by friends and loved ones with helping them to locate that perfect find.
